I don't know of any research, but many of the high schools in my area have
gone to semestering - 90 or 100-minute classes every day for 20 weeks.
Students have only 2 major subjects at a time, plus minors, and the schools
claim higher achievement.

Subject: block scheduling

>Greetings fellow LM_NET-ters,
>I am seeking information about research done on the
>value (or lack thereof) of block scheduling at the
>high school level. I am at a school that has used
>"double block" scheduling for 8 years now. Classes are
>100 minutes long and meet every other day. No one here
>has ever made an effort to determine if this schedule
>is actually beneficial to student achievement.
>I had heard that one entire county in Florida has done
>away with block scheduling which made me think that
>some research had been done.
>I am seeking research-based information because the
>faculty here is going to be surveyed, and I believe
>that they need solid information upon which to base
>their decisions/input.
>Time is of the essence, so I would greatly appreciate
>your contacting me directly at your earliest
>convenience!
>Thanks in advance!
