I, too, would like to add my 2 cents worth to this thread. Many moons ago,
when I was in high school, I remember distinctly the feeling of not being
welcome in the school library. I have spent nearly 30 years attempting to
overcome the stereotype of libraries and librarians. After 23 years of
public library work, I migrated to schools where I am now in my eighth year
of practice. I believe that the objective should be to get students into
the media center, not only for R and R (reference and research) but for that
other R and R (reading and recreation).

So, I welcome students during their lunch time. I have found that the
students realize I respect their needs for a comfortable place for
"downtime". I allow conversation, internet surfing (we have a filter),
newspaper and periodical reading. I let them sit on the floor and spread
out projects. In honoring their needs and their reasons for being in the
media center, I believe I am creating life-long habits that will include
using the public libraries and information centers. I guess I thought this
was what my profession was all about.
