Hello, Below is a collection of 5 responses that I received regarding my inquiry about the Alexandria for Web product. Many thanks to those who took the time to respond. People who are interested in specific contacts regarding any of these postings can email me, and I will pass those contacts on to you. Keith Johnson, Media Hopkins High School Hopkins, MN 55305 ++++++++++++ We have had Alexandria Web for about 3 months. Works great. We are running the program on an iMac with 64 mb of ram as our Internet server. I chose Alex Web, because we have both Macs and PCs in our Media Center and we wanted both to access the collection. Along with a number of subscription online data bases, students and teachers can access our catalog anywhere in the building or at home. It fulfills our desire to expand the walls of the MC and make the collection more accessible. We have found that the catalog is accessed frequently after hours and on weekends. That's a good sign! My greatest disappointment with the web product is with the appearance. There is very little customizing available. The background is gray and there are no fonts or design options. I have requested that Alexandria address that in the future. ++++++++ We have Alex (Mac) on the Web and it works great. Even our tech and the tech from our REMC was impressed. ++++++++ I have just ordered it. I saw a demornstration at one of our High Schools and was very impressed. +++++++++ We are a MAC school who uses the web to access Alexandria. I like it far better than I liked the 3.something we were using previously. The only major problem which Alexandria tech support has not answered (nor seems overly anxious to solve) is that when you log on from home (off campus) you cannot access the web sites that we've put on the database. We can access them from school but not off campus. ++++++++ We think the NEW Alex for Web (5.0)is great, as a matter of fact, we are using it instead of Research Workstation on some of our older Macs because they don't have the memory to run Research Workstation, but thay can run an old netscape and use the catalog. The new web version is virtually identical in function to the Research workstation, is platform independent, allows us to have our students do library searches home and makes it easy for students in each building to check the catalogs of the other schools in the district. Before you convert to 5.0 I suggest you take care of the corruption problems. Out conversion to 5.0 was plagued by problems with a corrupted data base in one building. ++++++++++++++ Saw your posting about Alexandria. Looks like your interested in the web version.. We have been using the Mac IP version in about 10 libraries since last fall. The short version is we all regret choosing Alexandria. For the long version you could talk to me or our District Tech person, =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
