I don't start with a dictionary or encyclopedia. I start with the yellow
pages of the telephone book. Last year, I wrote a letter to my 2nd and 3rd
graders a letter asking for their help in planning a party for an
out-of-town guest. I gave them a list of things I needed to find such as:
airport, bakery, clowns, pizza...You get the idea.
