Zoom control on menu bar

On one of our computers at school, the zoom control on Office 97 is not
there.  I have tried everything to make it appear without success.  It does
appear when I look at the options but the minute I close the options, the
zoom control disappears.  I tried the Help menu and nothing in that menu
addresses this.
