A number of years ago I was working in a public library in West Milford,
NJ. A patron returned a brand new children's book that had been dropped in
the bath tub. She told the clerks at the circ desk what happened, but told
them she had dried it out, and it was fine. The book now had thick wavy
pages, and the cover was starting to get moldy. When the clerks told her
she would have to pay for the book, the woman started yelling and making a
scene. I came over from the reference desk to explain to the woman why she
would have to pay for the book, but she didn't want to hear it. I honestly
don't remember if she paid for the book, but it is my story for un-humor
and damaged books.

Hi Everyone!
I keep two damaged books to exhibit to staff members. They are,
unfortunately, examples of damage done when books are taken and left in the
school swimming enclosure! Gets the message across!
