At the beginning of every year we do a story session from our "Book
Friends" where we have book characters talk about the "horrible things"
that have happened to them. Fox example, we have Ping talk about when he
was left out in a snowbank (with the damaged book to display), and
Madeleine talk about how she was kept away from her library for months on
end. We keep a collection of damaged books that go along with the story,
and cover such things as not eating while reading, not folding down pages,
not breaking book spines, etc. The kids love it, and I have been told by
some parents what a powerful impression it has made. I can't say that this
is the reason, but we really have very little trouble with damaged books,
just lost and missing ones, and that can happen to anyone.

Subject: GEN: HHMI Holiday Lecture Series

I have been trying to reach the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to purchase
copies of this year's holiday lecture series and have had no luck. If you
have a number (other than the ones on their flyer) they can be reached at,
or if you have Channel One and would be willing to tape these for me (I
would pay for tapes and s&h) I would greatly appreciate it.
