I enjoy doing booktalks more than almost any other part of my job, so it is difficult for me to admit this. I really had a struggle when the Sr. English teacher asked me to booktalk British classics. So many 18th and 19th century books are romances, which I personally don't mind reading, but just try palming them off on an 18-year-old boy! Even the most prestigious critics have admitted that they find many of these books boring, offensive, or obsolete. I've twice asked the teacher if he would allow world authors, not just British, but he is adamant. Do you have suggestions of easy-to-sell British classics? Any "contemporary" classics? Jane C.
