As a native Rhode Islander, I can't keep out of this any more. You may think our neighbors in Massachusetts are weird, calling a milkshake with ice cream a frappe: well, in R.I., it's a cabinet, as in, "I'll have a coffee cabinet, please." Dry cleaning establishments are called "cleansers," we go "down cellar" to check on the furnace, and yes, we too drink from "bubblers." Any other clamdiggers out there who want to add to the list? And we love our quahogs and little necks on the half shell. I refer all of you who love this kind of thing to the DARE (Dictionary of American Regional English). (I won't even start in on our weird pronunciation of words like "orange" and "Oregon.") -- Jane Hyde, Librarian 828-684-6232 St. Dunstan Library jhyde@christschool.org Christ School 500 Christ School Rd. Arden, NC 28704 When I get a little money, I buy books; and if any is left, I buy food and clothes. -- Erasmus =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
