ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 9, Number 61 July 3, 2000 In this issue: Two Librarians Named to NAS Panel on Protecting Kids From Pornography on the Internet Nicholas J. Belkin, Professor at Rutgers University's School of Library and Information Science, and Marilyn Mason, former Director of the Cleveland Public Library and the Atlanta Public Library, were appointed to the prestigious National Academy of Science Panel on Tools and Strategies for Protecting Kids From Pornography on the Internet. The Panel, which originated in a Congressional mandate under the Protection of Children from Sexual Predators Act of 1998, will spend 18 months examining and objectively reporting on the various methods available to protect children from pornography and sexual predators on the Internet. The panel's final report will also include an explication of how "packages" of technological tools and non-technological strategies may be used together to "enable local approaches" for guarding children against inappropriate Internet content. The report will not make specific policy or legislative recommendations, but rather aims to "promote a more reasoned consideration" of both public policy options and locally implementable controls. The panel is comprised of an eclectic group of educators, media and technology experts, and leaders in the not-for-profit world. Librarian and Professor Nicholas Belkin has a professional interest in the nature of information-seeking and problem solving, and the ways technology and computers lead to effective problem management. Marilyn Mason managed two major urban library systems and was Director of the 1978 White House Conference on Library and Information Services. She currently serves on the board of trustees of the Council on Library and Information Resources, and has a professional interest in the integration of print and electronic information. For a full description of the project and a complete, biographical list of panel members, see the NAS Web site: www4.nas.edu/webcr.nsf/ProjectScopeDisplay/CSTB-L-99-05A?OpenDocument.
