Thanks to al of those who sent me advice, suggestions and information re:
requiring reading to be done over the summer. Thought you might be
interested in some of the comments. I have tried to compile these and
shorten them without losing the general thrust.

*We require kids to hand in one project for one book that they read over the
summer. There does not appear to be any real accountability. they can do
dioramas, book marks, posters, send an e-mail to a teacher discussing the
book-just about anything they can think of. These are displayed in Sept.

*Incoming pre-AP students are required to read 3 selected books over the
summer. they must also complete a variety of assignments on these books by
the first day of class. Parents and students must sign this contract. They
are tested on their summer reading and their first three week grade is based
solely on the summer assignments.

*A large school system in Va. has a summer reading program for K-11. Was
required for 3 years but no longer required.

Public librarians did not like it-they were not included in the planing and
had to provide multiple copies of the books

Parents disliked it because they had to go to the public library or buy the
books then make the kids read them

Kids disliked it

Teachers hated it because they had to spend the first weeks of the new year
ascertaining if the books had been read and giving failing grades before
they knew the kids

The school librarians anguished over it as they had to provide the reading
lists.

* A Catholic school(K-8) All students entering grades 1-6 are required to
read 2 books, ne book report is due the first week of Sept.; the second s
written in class by the 2nd week.
Students in grades 7 & 8 are required to read 3 books. The book reports and
tests are a substantial part of the first quarter reading grade.

* A HS requires students to read during summer. It counts 10% towards grade
in first marking period. Required reading list for grades 9-12 and optional
library list.

* Another HS requires all students to read about 4 books during the summers.
Titles are assigned and students are tested on them first week of school.
It is done through the English dept.

* School requires summer reading for everyone. Grades 7-12-students read
2-3 books,. when they return to school they are supposedly checked on their
reading. Some teachers never ask or ask too late and kids have forgotten.

*MS has had required summer reading for years. School provides Econo-clad
type editions of 6-8 titles, one of which all students entering a grade must
read.

Students keep a journal of notes and personal responses. Journals are
checked by teachers in Sept. Students use journals to help them write an
essay related to one or more of the books. The essays help teachers to
assess student's writing skills.

Key to success is follow-up.

* a public librarian wrote:

the summer reading program through the schools was viewed as a punitive
program and many students started out the year with minuses because they
could not get a copy of the required titles.

It was decided that there would be a suggested list of authors or subjects
or genres and allow the students free choice. They will be rewarded this
year for participating and bringing some type of proof-one of which will be
a certificate from public library's summer reading program. She suggests
looking at the SLJ article Nov. 98, p. 28-31-make Lemonade. Or click on

*A middle school summer reading program called Read and B.R.A.G. is worth
looking at.

* Dade County, Fla is requiring summer reading in all it's schools; no
details available
