For several examples of bulletin boards with reading themes, and an interesting perspective on the value of bulletin boards go to "Top Ten Bulletin Boards That Teach": http://www.teaching-8.com I view :-) bulletin boards as a component of visual literacy & information skills. Bulletin boards are handy to demonstrate and to practice note-taking skills. Highlight a "Bulletin Board of the Week" on the morning news: It will provide recognition to a teacher for another job well done. It will spotlight the information on that bulletin board and make students more aware of the bulletin boards in their school. It will provide students a peek into classrooms they haven't seen, yet may become a part of in the coming years. One favorite bulletin board to reinforce lessons: the theme originated with a journal article or column several years ago--sorry that I can't cite the source properly. "Start Up Information With Keywords" Overall white background, the board is divided (much like a web site) into three segments. A light blue strip across the top, which is at least 12" top to bottom. (space the strip on the board leaving small margins all the way around to offset from the background) becomes a title area and a similar light blue strip down the left becomes a sidebar (at least 12" wide). A huge gold key slanted across the left corner with the title printed out on 2 sheets of white paper (landscape) You can do this on a word processor for a nice font and simply splice sheets together: 1st sheet words to fit in three lines Start Up / Information / With .... / 2nd sheet "Keywords" fits across third line. Subtitle down sidebar: "Keywords are also know as: / Search Terms / Descriptors / Subject Headings / "See & See Also References" / Hits / Topics / Main Ideas / Subject Entries " Header to body of message, "If you are having trouble finding enough information on your subject, think about locating additional keywords by filling out this pattern: similar terms, larger terms, and smaller terms." Divide rest of space into four sections: "Beginning Search Term" / "Similar Search Terms [Other ways to say or spell it]" / "Larger Search Terms" / "Smaller Search Terms" (I did this landscape with a border around each page.) Using terms from resources used in your media center, change out examples under these sections each month. (Just print and trim to fit within the borders.) For African-American History Month I used (respectively): African-Americans / Afro-Americans, Black Americans, Blacks (United States), Negroes (United States) / Ethnic Diversity in the United States, African Heritage / Gullah Culture, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), African-American Artists. cmillswms@aol.com Colleen Mills Williams PK-12 Media Specialist Florida Certification "Learn from the past, live in the present, plan for the future." =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
