Hi everyone,
Last night I was watching an interview with Michael Caine by Michael Parkinson in
which Caine said
that there were three key things that got him where he is today.
1. The death of his father, who, after a life's work as a Billlingsgate Fish Market
worker, died
with 1/11d in his pocket. Caine was determined to make his life more productive.
2. Going to a grammar school that allowed him to meet kids from different
backgrounds and see the
wider possibilities the world offered.
3. His local library where he spent endless hours reading and learning and
escaping. He was
horrified that public libraries in Britain were being closed, and made a powerful
statement that
they should be opening more. He feels that the only way forward is to read well
and widely.

So here's to all the Michael Caines and J.K. Rowlings and John Marsdens and all
those others who are
doing so much to make our job easier.

Cheers
Barbara
