The elementary school where I did my student teaching used notebooks. Each class had a looseleaf binder with a page for each child. The children performed independent checkout the following way. They wrote their name on the book card. They filed the book card in the looseleaf binder on their page (I think the librarian used book a book pocket on the pages to hold the cards, but plastic page protectors would work, too. The students take a date due card(s) from a basket at the circulation desk and place it in their selection(s). All books are checked for cards by the librarian before the kids leave(when they line up to go). A student aide or the librarian checks that a book card has been deposited in the book card pocket for every page (indicating that every student has selected a book). I have read that kindergartners and other non- readers like to decorate their page with personal art or stickers, so they can easily recognize it. You could also use the chldren's picture glued to the page. This system worked well for the library. It freed the librarian from circulation duties (she had no aide except some student helpers) while fostering independence and responsibility in the students. She taught the kids to shelve the Easy Readers. The other books she either shelved herself or used a trained student helper for shelving.
