Hi Colleen and others, I agree that it is not this group's role to provide initial training, and I don't think we do. I think we build on issues that are raised in either the university or the workplace context, but some are so common you wonder if they are being addressed adequately while others are so broad they are daunting! I believe smart universities offering library studies (or whatever particular label they give it) would be monitoring this listserv particularly and those in Canada, Australia and wherever else there is a strong body of teacher-librarians (or whatever particular label you are given) to keep in touch with the way the job is changing and the challenges we need to meet. The global nature of email is one of its strengths, and I know that our colleagues in the UK are starting to demand some of the respect that we enjoy because they have been able to be exposed to how things can be done differently. I know some universities do require students to correspond with 'someone overseas' as part of their courses as I have often been that overseas contact, but I believe it needs to be more than that. Professors and lecturers, just like teachers, need to constantly examine their practices and the reasons for them to ensure they are meeting the needs of their clients. For instance, on July 1 a goods and services tax was implemented in Australia and this has impacted greatly on library budgeting because neither books nor support services had attracted any tax previously. There have been lots of questions and discussion and the various regional groups are now holding PD sessions for their members. No doubt, it will be incorporated into Library Management course by next semester. And even though I only completed my M.Ed in teacher-librarianship last year, I know certain units in the course have been reviewed already to keep up with the impact and possibilities of technology. I'm not sure that change HAS to be based on scientific research - sometimes by the time it is done and suggestions for solutions made, we have worked out how to solve the problem anyway, and moved on to new challenges. Education is dynamic and as information and resource specialists, we should be ahead of the field, not behind it, and this listserv can play a key role.
