LM_NET: Library Media Networking
Dear All,
A few weeks ago I found myself back in New England for a family
reunion. We had some free time so we wandered up to historic
Portsmouth, New Hampshire. While walking around the downtown area,
we discovered a great find: a charming independent children's'
book store called Shoofly Pie. It is located on Daniel Street in
an old historic corner building and could be a set for a future
movie about children's' book stores. The friendly owner was only
too happy to chat with me about Harry, recent Newbery winners and
book publishing in general. Her displays included many new
offerings along with
the old favorites. I was really sad that I could not have shared
the store with my own kids (20 something career girls, now).
I purchased 2 books for a diversity grant that I was awarded right
before school ended. She did not ask for a pay stub or a union
card but readily extended a 20% discount. She also included a
bookmark with a recipe for Shoofly Pie credited to a local author,
Esther Buffler, the first Poet Laureate of Portsmouth and author
of three children's books.
If you know of any charming little bookstores maybe you can share
them with the group.
