Deleting mail

There is probably a simple solution to this--but I haven't figured it
out yet.  If someone could help, I'd be appreciateive.  I'm using
Netscape 4.7 for e-mail.  I have received several messages about not
opening certain other messages because of a virus.  Thank goodness, I
haven't yet had the problem--but I want to be ready!  In 4.7, as soon as
you highlight a message it opens.  It must be highlighted ( I think) to
delete.  How do I delete without opening a message?  TIA.
