Barbara, ***5. Lesson for us - what is it about the series, or its promotion, or whatever that has been so successful that we can take away and use in our classrooms or libraries?*** I think that one of the main attractions of the book is its universal appeal to our imagination. How many of us remember playing in the dirt as small children and wishing that perhaps we could make ourselves smaller and walk into an ant hill as a giant of all we survey . . . or make ourselves bigger and imagine wading through a lake or bay nearby? The attraction for educators seems to be that even wizards and witches need to go to school - there isn't anything magical about learning, everyone has to work hard at knowing more than they do at any point in their lives and learning to use their skills to a sound purpose. The primary evidence I can cite about how magical the ability to read is - is the similarity fans have with Harry when he was drawn into the Tom Riddle diary in the second book . . . readers become oblivious to almost everything around them and become so engrossed in the book, it is as if they have transported themselves to another place and time! I have always tried to convince my patrons that a good book is truly the only type of time machine ... it can take us to places we have never been and gives us experiences we might never otherwise have known . . .
