Congratulations to Jan! I remember plowing through the Michigan SLMS licensing exam and being uncertain about the Dewey questions. I thanked my cooperating librarian at the Friends School in Detroit for insisting I shelve books even though the advisor of my program assured me this was not a "professional" task! I think even the schools that have excellent school media degree programs forget that at many, many schools, the library is a "one-horse show;" there are no paraprofessionals, no clerks, no cataloguers. We have to learn to do it all, and we better know our Dewey. Fortunately, shelving books is a great way to learn, and become very familiar with those sections of your current library that are well used. (When I went from an all-girls middle school to a co-ed HS I quickly learned the numbers for crime, skateboarding, race cars, war and weapons). Those of us who are blessed with interns from local programs should be alert to those day-to-day details which get short shrift in formal programs. Maureen S.
