This a response to the question, "But don't all programs require an internship? That's where you learn the practical." I, like everyone else, has been following the discussion about "dumb questions," and what kind of training MLS schools are providing. To answer your question, not every college or university requires an internship. I am going to start my first job in the field this fall. I am only two-thirds through the program at my school, but because there is a shortage of library media specialists in my state, schools can hire students who have not yet received certification as long as they meet certain conditions. In my case, I need only to have completed 12 credits in my program and have to complete another 9 credits in the next year. I have not done student teaching, but come Sept. 6, I will be teaching 5 or 6 classes a day. My student teaching will be waived, but I most certainly have many questions about my new career that might have been answered had I done my student teaching.
