I don't have a problem with the underrepresentation of girls in Harry Potter. YET. Keep in mind that there are very few girls in the lives of normal 10-12 year olds! When Harry's in puberty, I expect girls to crop up all over, and we're seeing this in Harry IV with the first formal dance/prom. He's also got a crush on Cho and the boyfriend/girlfriend angle was played up pretty heavily in Harry IV. I say give it time. I think we'll see more girl characters as we progress through the series.
