LM_NET: Library Media Networking

Sorry if I came off a little negative on the last post, but I guess I am
just tired today. I took on a library last year that greatly resembled the
one described in one of the other articles on Jim Trelease's page. Naive
"newbie" that I was I thought "resurrection" would be relatively easy when I
interviewed for the position in mid-June 1999. I didn't know than that it
would take the bureaucracy two months to complete the hiring process or that
I would not be able to get into the library until the day pre-school
in-service started (in the library). Nor did I know that expect to be
teaching SFA Roots for three quarters of the year. Add three committee
assignments and the principal's habit of booking every possible after school
meeting in the library (I know, but we do have a full classroom sized staff
lounge, a 600 seat auditorium, two lunchrooms, and a conference room, not to
mention the large table in his office). I managed to be able to report at
least one example of collaboration at every grade level PreK-6 on my year
end report to central office, but weeding nearly 16,000 volumes and
disposing of media I no longer can support (any one else still have 78 rpm
records, reel-to-reel audio tapes, or film loops?) has required a lot of
extra time including the last month of my vacation. The junk is gone and
having read someone else's experience today, I now know how to improve the
appearance of the 3000 volumes remaining. I also have been blessed with
good budget thanks to a district-wide grant that allowed me to buy a lot of
new books, but unpacking those will have to wait. I need a break.

Wish Amazon had delivered as promised, but that's another story.
