Hi Dawn: When I first started working at my school 16 years ago, we had shelf markers given to the school by a paint store, they were the wooden ruler-shaped things painters stir their paint with, and you can paint them any color you want. Without sounding acrimonious, impertinent or bothered by your question, which is not my intention at all, I threw them all out. In order for students to learn how to locate books, they have to know where books belong on a shelf. Why then the crutch of a shelf marker? You have to realize that I am a very flexible person, so for me to see a book out of place and "approximately" where it should be, is not a bother. If this bothers you, there are many ways using shelf markers to show students where a book belongs. You also have to take into consideration if you have a clerk or not, although I did it even when I was by myself. I must admit it drove me crazy sometimes, but the more my students could independently put a book in its right place on the shelf, the prouder they were and the more they wanted to do this matching game. Helping one another was fun for them. I hope this helps Nita Garcia Media Specialist Greenglade Elementary Miami, Florida nitagarcia@aol.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
