Okay, shelf markers have a wonderful purpose. My little people used them to help them remember where they were and what they were doing. By using different colored shelf markers, I could also tell at a glance the students that got to check out that day and students that were reading, but not checking out. By third grade I didn't require the shelf markers. I taught the, tip the book next to your book down, trick. That way other students could tell it was marking a spot and didn't need to be fixed. I seemed to have many students that would go a long and "clean up" the shelves for me, just pulling one out didn't always mark the spot for very long. My second graders and up when working on Fiction organization would shelve the books that came in from their class. This was great fun for them and they learned about spine labels and alphabetical order. R.
