Humor:Midwife's Apprentice

I have a half-sister, named Alice, in 6th grade.  She is below her grade =
level in reading, and 3 states away so I can't help her much.  That is not =
to say I could necessarily help her anyway, because she is resistant to =
help.  She wants very much to believe she is normal and rejects special =
attention.

Evidently, she hasn't been able to complete her book report on The =
Midwife's Apprentice, which is a couple weeks overdue.  My immediate =
reaction, on hearing about the situation, was "What @#%!& yahoo of a =
know-nothing, amateur, charter school teacher would assign this book for =
6th graders, much less ones reading behind level?"

Alice insisted that she had the book and understood it very well.  She =
only was puzzled about one thing, she said, "What's a midwife?"
