>>But don't we do this with our books? We buy one copy of a book, and
hundreds of students use that same copy. We should buy a copy for each
student, because the authors depend on the royalties from sales for their
livelihoods.>>

The difference here, is that the books we buy do NOT have a written license
agreement (that you are to read, and agree to, prior to use) that states in
no uncertain terms that the software may NOT be copied or given to others.

A great number of people state, "Well, it's for SCHOOL...and we don't have
the money, so we buy a couple copies and put it on all of our computers..."
Well, I work in a school that doesn't have the money, so we do without until
we GET the money...Everyone on our staff understands the law, because it is
my job as the computer person to annually explain copyright issues and remove
any software that our school site did not purchase which is found on
computers--I have only had to remove software twice in nine years, and then
it was with a new teacher who misunderstood the policy...We handle this quite
simply: NO software is brought in or installed on classroom computers unless
the teacher donates it to the school...and then it is placed only on the
appropriate number of computers for which copies were bought. We also do not
allow kids to bring in disks or cd's.

Harsh? Nope...the law...and our principal takes this very seriously...If we
need 30 copies, we buy 30 copies...expensive, yes...but we are in compliance,
and we set a good example for the kids...

We also annually explain copyright issues to the kids...and many are shocked
at what they learn...I have a great PowerPoint presentation I use as the
first class...makes it interesting and simple...and gets the point across...
