I sent Andy's recent posting about the increases in bandwidth and potential prefixes to my scientist husband, and I thought the Netters would enjoy his response.... -------------------------- Interesting... A logical follow up is what are the prefixes when size decreases... 0.001 is milli- (1000 milligrams = 1 gram) (shorthand m) 0.00001 is micro- (1000 micrograms = 1 milligram) (shorthand µ) 0.0000001 is nano- (1000 nanograms = 1 microgram) (shorthand n) 0.000000001 is pico- (1000 picograms = 1 microgram) (shorthand p) 0.00000000001 is femto- (1000 femtograms = 1 picogram) (shorthand f) Note- 1 femtogram of a substance is usually a manageable number of individual molecules of that substance. But what comes next? It would also be nice to know what the abbreviation is for these new units. I assume P, E, Z, and Y (since G, M, and T are giga-, meta-, and tera-). Also the etymology- these are historically greek, are these new prefixes greek or geek? -- Elizabeth A. Kaminetz L.
