We have a parent who has challenged the use of the book, "Summer of My German Soldier" by Bette Greene in the 6th grade classroom. Though not unanimously, the review committee approved its use at that level. The parent is now appealing that decision and a new committee which I chair, has been formed. What I need from you are articles, references, etc. dealing with first amendment rights and info about children reading about trauma (child abuse) and not becoming traumatized, i.e., positive articles that reading a book like this might actually help a child. Any lesson plans involving the book? I have book reviews, author info, best book lists where it appears, and awards it has won. Meeting is June 20 so I need info before that time. Thanks a million!
