Liz: I teach and am the .5 librarian (we have a full time librarian, also) in a Texas middle school of over 1500 students, grades 6, 7 & 8. For the sixth grade, we routinely order the Texas Bluebonnet collection (grades 3-6). We also have a large Accelerated Reader collection, as this program has been very popular in our district in the past few years. We started out at as a 6-8 grade school, so it is difficult to address impact on the selection process. As to a new building, the feature article in the March, 1999 edition of Electronic School discusses integrating technology into a high school media center. It is worthwhile reading for those of us at the middle school level also. I do not have the exact address for that issue, but I read it online at the Electronic School site. That address is www.electronic-school.com. Good luck, Patsy McLaughlin Bammel Middle School Library Houston, Texas pmclaug284@aol.com << Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 20:59:20 -0400 From: Liz McMahon <mcdear@PIVOT.NET> Subject: New Middle School: adding 6th grade MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit We are in the very preliminary stages of designing our new middle school. We will be going from 470 7th & 8th graders to approx. 700 6th, 7th & 8th graders. I would appreciate any info from anyone who has added 6th grade to an existing 7/8 middle school. Particularly, how did it impact your collection development ? What kind of class scheduling do you use? We are totally flexible now....should I anticipate a change to more fixed schedule demands? Any info on experiences would be very helpful. Also, any suggestions for the design & construction process would always be greatly appreciated. This is my first totally new construction project....luckily I am on the district building committee. That alone is quite an education. I strongly advise getting on that committee to anyone involved in construction. Thanks.
