Just to reassure the younger members, I took the NTE in 1961. It was not required but my friends took it and so I joined them. At that time an exam in your certificatiion was required to teach in Boston as a provisional teacher and then another exam to be permanently appointed. This required a demonstration lesson. It counted for a significant part of the grade. I guess there is nothing new, it just gets adjusted and realigned.
