Here, edited for brevity, are the ideas I received, for-profit ones
first:
1) Consulting, either to your own former school district or to other
districts/counties/entities;
2) Consulting to other kinds of organizations (public libraries, special
libraries, textbook publishers, trade book publishers, vendors to the
library trade);
3) A new job at another kind of library (public, college, private
school, special);
4) Research for publishers (fact checking, test compilation), vendors,
radio/TV stations;
5) Work in a book store;
6) Substitute;
7) Work for a library-trade vendor (sales, product development);
8) Volunteer -- small private libraries, literacy programs, ESL
coaching, children's library programs.
Another idea not mentioned in the responses might be technical writing
on a contract basis (I have a cousin, retired from the military, who
does this).
One respondent is working for the summer in a wine tasting room and
finds it quite a pleasure to deal with happy customers!
Thank you all for your responses. There is truly something here for
everyone.
