Elem: notebooks

For anyone who's still subscribed to this thing over this summer, hope
you can help me,

I'm locked in a fixed schedule library, and I'm tossing around the idea
of using notebooks for grades 5 and 6, for taking notes, writing stories
or even illustrating in them..  Has anyone ever tried this before?
Successful?  Waste of time?
