Many thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions for "literary
survivors".

Thanks also to Margaret Hall who supplied the following definiton of
survivor themes:

From Tales of Love and Terror:  Booktalking the Classics Old and New.  Hazel
Rochman defines survival fairly broadly:  ""The theme survival encompasses
many kinds of struggle, from wilderness adventure and escape from slavery,
to family conflict and teenage suicide."  These are the books she
recommends.
