TECH: Downloading question

My sister has sent me a file as an attachment that is a text file (.txt).
When I downloaded it, AOL won't let me open it saying it's too big to open.
I tried opening it in Word but it came out as gibberish (31 pages of
gibberish!)  I've had this problem before.  I'm sure there's a simple
solution........ I just don't know what it is.  Would appreciate any help
anyone can give me.  Thanks!
