Sorry this hit took so long. Most people who responded endorsed the use of a time clock in the media center so that students could punch in and out using their passes. Some people objected to the ethics of using a time clock. The advantages with the clock are: students seemed to be more accountable, librarians are able to look in the "in box" of passes to see who is in the library at any given time, students don't get "lost" in the halls and teachers have accurate records of time in and out. Aword of caution, however, is that it is easy to look as if student is "clocking out" and does not really do so. Then student leaves and will come back later to really clock out. Time clocks have been purchased from Brodart, Simplez, Highsmith, Gaylord, Staples, Office Max and Sam's Club. Sam's Club was the cheapest at $189. One person contacted businesses in town and bought an old one from them. Another suggestion is to post a student aide at the door to record comings and goings. One person set up an old computer with data base which game fields like who are you, who sent you, what time, why are you here? Some use sign in and sign out sheets. Good luck! -- Beverly A.
