Re: Advantages and disadvantages of AR

I was one of the last librarians in our system to get AR, particularly
because of fact that students want to read AR books only instead of
selecting other good books that.  However, I have been pleasantly surprised.
Although the students usually check out at least one AR book when the come
into the library, I have seen no decline in circulation of other books.  I
have purchased several custom AR disks to provide tests on books that we
already have and yesterday one of my students who is very bright but
reluctant to check out books because she says she has read them all selected
two on my latest custom test disk.

I think the way that the tests are used by the classroom teacher plays a big
role in whether students select AR books only or select both AR books and
books that do not have tests.
