'Netter folks, Have you ever defended BUMPS IN THE NIGHT? If so, would you be willing to share the results of your reevaluation? The chapter book BUMPS IN THE NIGHT by Harry Allard, c1979, was recently challenged in our district. Dudley the Stork attends a seance and discovers Donald the Horse, a ghost, wants to play. Description of a seance is the focus of complaint about this primary-level book. Our Board-adopted policy for reevaluation was followed, a public hearing held, and the Board's Selection and Reevaluation Committee voted 4-2 to keep the book in the library. That decision is now being appealed to the full school board. [BTW, we collected 5 generally positive reviews from 20+ years ago. We identified BUMPS ... as being a CHILDREN'S CATALOG selection in '81, '86, and '91. The award-winning qualities of both author and illustrator (James Marshall) were noted and intellectual freedom arguments made.] We hope to support our renewed argument for keeping BUMPS ... by citing precedents from other communities. So, if you've ever dealt with a challenge to BUMPS ..., please let me know. Thanks, Chuck ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chuck Pauley, Librarian pauleyc@Willmar.K12.MN.US Roosevelt Elementary School 1800 19th Avenue SW 320-231-8471, ext.7311 Willmar, MN 56201 FAX 320-231-1170 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
