Alexandria questions

I am getting ready to automate using Alexandria and I have a few questions:

1.  For economy and  because the sales rep recommended this as the best
solution for us, I am planning to download MARC records using Intercat.  My
elementary collection is about 6,000 books.  Can anyone give me an idea of
how much time to plan for this?  Any problems I need to be aware of?

2.  Scanners---Did you buy your scanner from Companion?  Is there a less
expensive source?  Which scanner would you recommend?  Is anyone using the
portable laser scanner?  Is it worth the extra money?

3.  Label protectors_  I am going to print my own Smart Barcodes using the
laser printer.   Should I go with the label protectors that Companion sells
or is there a less expensive source?

I appreciate any suggestions or warnings you can give me about the whole
automation process. I hope to get this up and running by the time school
starts in the fall and I am both excited and nervous about all the
decisions still to be made.
