I got wonderful and wise responses to my request for quality first grade
reading level books to add to my collection. They really are out
there!!! This hit begins with recommended sources, then moves to
recommended series and ends with great ideas for finding additional
titles. There was a lot of interest in this. This hit is dedicated to
the many elementary librarians who asked for it!!!

Rookie Readers by Children Press (mentioned several times)

Pebble Books by Capstone press (very simple nonfiction books;ie.Beans in
a garden.Beans in a pod.)

Wright Group which has a large selection but they are paperbacks but can
be reinforced
with Capco covers. Wright group books include nonfiction with real
photos which the kids love.

The Permabound catalog (mentioned more than once) has six pages closely
printed of beginning to read books, listing most of the major imprints
at "level 1". Some of the best available from Permabound are:
Early Step Into Reading books pub. by Random House, especially "The Lion
and the Mouse" by Herman;
Step Into Reading Step 1 pub. by Random House, especially "Hello, House"
by Hayward and "David and the Giant" by Little;
Hello Reader Level 1 pub. by Scholastic, especially "Itchy Itchy Chicken Pox".
Of course, most first graders will not stay at that beginning level for
long, so I'd recommend you move into the Level 2 categories as well,
especially buying the Henry and Mudge books by Rylant; the I Can Read Books
Levels 1 and 2, especially the Frog and Toad books by Lobel; and the
Eyewitness Readers Levels 1 and 2, which are non-fiction at a very basic
level. I especially like: "Tale of a Tadpole" by Wallace, and "Animal
Hospital" by Hodge.

Follett (800-435-6170) has a binding called Follett Bound. These books have
cards with some of the words in the story, and a list of activities in the
back. The title of the series: My First Hello Reader series published
by Scholastic. Especially popular: "The Pet that I Want" by Packard,
and "The Ball Game" by Packard.

Penworthy prebound library books carry a selection of pk-1 from various
publishers (The Penworthy web site Http://www.penworthy.com phone number
414 287 4600.)

Richard Owens Publishers

Gumdrop Books, and particulary Bank Street Readers. (recommended twice)

Scholastic Book Fairs and other paperback publishers like Random House
have great 1st
readers.

The best new books for first graders are the Biscuit books. He is a very
cute puppy, and I cannot keep them on the shelves - they fly off.

Margaret Hillert controlled vocabulary books. Follett has a set of them
. My teachers love them for the struggling readers to give them a sense
of accomplishment.

-Amelia Bedelia Series
-Frog and Toad Series
-Little Bear Series
-Henry and Mudge Series

One of the best ways to find good beginning reader books that you like
is to go to the nearest children's book store if you can, and browse.

The Elementary School Library Collection by Brodart has grade-leveled lists.

Why not look at Accelerated Rearder's book guide or title finder for
some non-controlled vocabulary books that are written on first grade
level, then try to order them BTSB. You may already have a lot in your
library!

I visit the children's room of my local public library (which has more
money than I do and therefore more books), and check its shelves. If you
do that, you get to see the books first hand.
