Thanks to everyone who responded about the two bar code issue. The responses were interesting to me. Many of you use two bar codes for various reasons. The most common being one on the outside and one on the inside in case the outside one is damaged. More than a few said they put them on their shelflist cards (see, you weren't alone!). Some used the second one as a backup and some used it inside (somewhere) to identify the book as school property. The major comment was that the bar codes on the outside of the books are often torn, unreadable, taken off by 'little darlings'. I found this interesting, as I do not put my bar codes on the outside of the books at all -- for that reason. It is true that inventory would be a lot easier, but I place the bar code in the back, scan it and date stamp it when it is checked out. For inventory, I put the books in order on the shelves (as I go) then take each section down, scan it and put it back in place. That way, inventory and organization are done together. Granted, my library has only about 9,000 books currently. Anyway, I REALLY appreciate all the information and I have become very enlightened!
