We've been talking lately about tracking overdues, and I'd like to share my system with you. I'd love to take credit for it, but it just sort of happened, and I've capitalized upon it. At this time of year, the guidance dept meets with all students to review their schedules for next year. For efficiency, they do this in the library, and I close the library to individuals and classes for this (brief!) three day period. Each student is seen by the guidance staff and then by me -- they are not allowed to leave until I've had a chance to speak with them. So in three days, I see ALL my 9th, 10th, and 11th graders and inform them of their obligations. Sometimes books come back on the spot, others -- "I'll see you tomorrow." It certainly doesn't take care of everybody, but the conscientious ones respond well to this system.
