I asked my son, the second year law student (am I proud or what? :))) to decipher the COPPA stuff for me. This is his opinion.... -Kate Stirk, Media Specialist Annunciation Catholic Academy stirkk@annunciationacademy.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ I read the article and went to the FTC site. I found information about it under Consumer Protection, Children's Issues. There are a couple of links there that talk about the Act. I also read the text of the act. I don't see that it applies to you at all. The thrust of the Act is the requirement that sites collecting information from children under 13 that could be used to personally identify them must have a Privacy statement and must have a mechanism through which Parental Consent can be verified. I looked at Annunciation's site and it doesn't seem that it collects any information at all. As to the "Acceptable Use Policy," I am taking you to mean that you are concerned that Annunciation could run afoul of the law by allowing children to access sites that illegally collect information from children under 13. As I read the law, that does not seem to be the case. The wiredkids.org article mentioned schools, but I read that to mean that the author was expressing concern that the scope of the law would be expanded to include all websites that could be accessed by children, and that would be based on what schools allow children to access. I did not take it to mean that schools need to narrow their acceptable use policies to exclude sites that collect information from children under 13, and the law certainly does not discuss that issue. The text of the statute is available on the FTC website at http://www.ftc.gov/ogc/coppa1.htm Information on "How to Comply With The Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule" is available at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/coppa.htm Hope this helps. ------------------------------------------------- I hope this helps someone else, too! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
