GEN: Pat Conroy?? Book

Hello, everyone!

My principal stumped me with the following request:

He read a book back in the 70's called "The Water is Wide" by Pat Conroy
about a teacher who works with African-American students on an isolated
island off South Carolina.  The movie "Conrack" with Jon Voight is based
on this book.  He said he read the sequel to this book, which was about
the same teacher going to an urban school (Baltimore, maybe?).  This
book was filled with inspiring, tragic, and sometimes funny chapters.
He said it was a bestseller from the late 1970's.

I have searched all of Pat Conroy's books with him, but none matches his
description.  I think that maybe he is mistaken and the book is really
by another author.  I know this request is a little vague, but my
principal said he's been looking for this book for years (he lent out
his copy and didn't get it back) ... and that he would be "really
impressed" if I could find it.  I know how important this is to him, so
I thought I would try you guys!
