They were known as "Hooker's girls."  Hooker was an early Commanding =
General of the Army of the Potomac.  Up to this point, the general term =
for these prostitutes was "camp followers."

Oneo the high school English teachers asked me about this.  There was a
Geneal Hooker who served in the Civil War.  One of her seniors stated that
he had heard that is where the term "hoooker" as in prostitute originated.
Has anyone else heard that? Thanks for yor help.  I will post as soon as I
get an answer.
