I think it is vitally important that we give away and loan as much as we
can.  I have a school of 1200--I maybe give away $100 worth of supplies a
year.  But the public relations is well worth it.  I give out lined paper
(bought 500 sheets before school starts for a buck or two), 1 or 2 pieces of
construction paper, pencils, pens, loaner disks, loan stencils, scissors,
crayons, markers, colored pencils. etc.  I charge 25 cents for poster paper,
3 or more sheets of construction paper, 3 ft. of big colored roll paper, 10
cents for Xeroxing overhead transparencies, etc.  I take a lot of iou's and
I put the charges in the automated system when I think about it.  We also
give change for pop machines etc. and don't charge for computer printing and
a 5 cent charge for copy machine.  I do have a pretty good budget, but if I
didn't I would go to student government or the PTA and ask for money so I
could loan/give away this stuff.  At about $1 a day, why shouldn't we be as
helpful to the kids and staff as we can.  If someone abuses the system we
can deal with that on an individual basis.
