Hi all. Here are the responses I received from my request for resources for human sexuality classroom materials - grades 7-9. Thanks so much to those who responded. Maybe your teacher could use the Brainpop Health movies at www.brainpop.com <http://www.brainpop.com> . They have short features about puberty, menstruation, acne, and how babies are made. And the best part? They're free if your students have Internet access! (One tip: Have headphones. Trust me on this.) _____________________________________________ My personal favorite is The Cartoon Guide to Sex, by Larry Gonick and Christine Devault. It's light-hearted and fun but delivers very good information with a mature perspective. It deals with the natural and physical aspects of sex, the social and societal side of things, pregnancy and birth control, STDs and sexual health, rape, and a whole host of other issues. We can't keep it on the shelves. _________________________________________________________ I began to have them write questions on paper at the beginning of the unit and I taught from the questions they posed. They remained anonymous and I really didn't present the question itself, just the information that would surround that topic presented in the question. By that time, I had accumulated lots of resources and it wasn't a problem. I don't know if this helps, but here are my suggestions. It may not be possible for this year, but if this is going to be a part of the curriculum from now on, the department the teacher works in and the library could begin purchasing resources that can be used again and again. Biological supply companies such as Carolina Biological Supply <http://www.carolina.com/> are an excellent source. Frey Scientific is another great place to look <http://www.freybg.com/>. There are lots of suggestions there for curriculum and supplemental materials in addition to models and science supplies. If the department can afford to purchase a model of the human torso (I know how expensive these are, believe me!) that would be a wonderful resource. To be able to see what is being discussed, especially on that topic, removes a great deal of the temptation to giggle and the mystery is certainly gone. Also, a good, yet age appropriate anatomy book to use as a class "encyclopedia" of sorts is excellent to have. Other resource books that the library might want to think about are THE HUMAN BODY: AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO ITS STRUCTURE, FUNCTION, AND DISORDERS Charles Clayman, MD is the editor-in-chief. It's published by Dorling Kindersley, ISBN 1-56458-992-7. Also, I have an ANCIENT copy of READER'S DIGEST ABC'S OF THE HUMAN BODY: A FAMILY ANSWER BOOK. Alma E. Guinnes was the editor of my 1987 edition and the ISBN is 0-89577-220-5. An updated copy of this is probably excellent if it's available. The Nature Company DISCOVERIES LIBRARY Series has a great book titled HUMAN BODY. I don't have that in front of me, but I've seen it and it's excellent as are all the science texts in that series. The other suggestion I have is to check the WWW for health curricula. I'm giving you the site for my state (North Carolina) <http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/curriculum/health/>. While I don't agree with everything here personally, it is a start. A search of the WWW for state health curricula or Canadian curricula is a great way to get other ideas. Often times, these curriculum matrix sites have sample lesson plans and ideas that are easily modified for your own needs. It might keep the teacher from re-inventing the wheel...
