However, in building their skills, we can emphasize the use of the
catalog to learn how books and materials are organized in 'strange'
libraries. All collections are rearranged in some way to pull items
together in 'violation' of strict cataloging and classification rules.
Knowing why one library makes exceptions prepares students to
be on the lookout for exceptions in other libraries.

When I taught the catalog (card in those days <grin>), I told the
students that they could use the principles learned to find a book in
*any* library (or find the shelf where the book should be). I never
had an unsuccessful report from any student who tried it.
