A 4th grader checked out *My Brother Sam is Dead.* The mother sent note to teacher complaining of cursing in book, so child checked out another for his report. Teacher asked me to handle it with child. So today when the student arrived he asked me if his teacher had given me the book. I began a little talk on what we know of a character who speaks this way, and why author might do this in a book.etc.....and author is not trying to get us to speak this way, but we learn about the character through the language. Student replied, "Oh yes, I know about these words because my parents use them all the time."----I could hardly keep a straight face! -- Mary Croix Ludwick, MLS B.B.
