Remember way back when, when I was really excited because our kids were
going to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the football here in Canberra.
It seems a lot more than two weeks ago! Well, the comp has finally
finished and Norway won gold, with the USA silver. Can't remember bronze!

And if you think the NBC coverage has been crook, you should have heard my
most unlady-like language earlier this evening. Coming home in the car,
radio on, they are announcing the line up for the women's 200m semi-final
with three Aussies in with a chance including Cathy Freeman, and the
station goes to an ad then a newsbreak. And it wasn't even new news - just
stuff that's been on all day! By the time they finished the race had been
run!!!!! You should have seen me scoot round the supermarket so I could be
home in time to watch the final. All credit to Marion Jones - she is
awesome. And to maintain her focus with all the controversy surrounding
her hubby is a lesson for us all.

But I think blind athlete Marla Runyan has qualified for the final of the
1500m. She came in 6th in the semi, but again, after making a fuss about
her effort, the radio coverage didn't follow through. @#*^%

And if you caught an NBC news coverage of a program on each night after the
day's competition called The Dream, then you will know a little more about
Aussies and their sport.

I was speaking to a friend who bought her tickets on the very first day
they were released and was so excited that she was bouncing around like a
kid. But then breast cancer and chemotherapy intervened and she has been
so sick - but last week she and her husband went to Sydney as planned. She
had a wheelchair and she told me that people could not have been more
helpful on the trains, at the stadium where people were actually running to
help her, and at the venues when her original seating had to be changed
because of the wheelchair! She said in many cases they were given even
better seats. She says that no matter what happens in the future, she is
another who has realised a childhood dream despite the odds!

But now, I must say farewell from this side of the Pacific because tomorrow
hubby and I are heading up to the mountains for some fresh air and fishing
for a few days so I will be offline. Laptop and TV are going with me
though but no phones!

It has been a pleasure to add my little bit to what has been a massive
contribution by a whole nation and I do appreciate all the messages of
support that you have sent me. It is such a buzz to know that so many kids
(and their teachers) got just a little extra through my efforts.

May the spirit of peace, harmony and friendship that has enhanced this time
continue.

Cheers
Barbara
