There has been some concern about participating in the assessment pilot for library media national board certification. Some thought that if one participated in the pilot they would have to wait several years to apply for certification. This is not the case. Please read the message I received below from our Pilot Coordinator at ETS for further clarification. ________________ Paula, Thank you for your interest in the National Board Certification for Library/Media. The certificate is scheduled to be available in December of 2001. The National Board Certification process consists of completing a 4-entry portfolio and a 6-exercise computer-based assessment. While the assessment is in the development stage, the different sections of the assessment are going to be pilot tested. Library/Media specialists are being recruited to assist the development staff by contributing feedback on one portfolio entry. It can be videotaping a class lesson or writing an analysis of student work samples. It takes approximately 10-15 hours of work to complete an activity. There is a $150 honorarium for completing and returning a portfolio entry. Feedback is not given to the participants since the pilot is for validation and research purposes only. The pilot entries are not scored. It is absolutely beneficial for a teacher to participate in the pilot test if they are considering pursuing National Certification. The pilot participant will gain an understanding of what the portfolio section of the actual certification assessment is going to involve. Teachers may participate in the pilot and pursue National Certification the same year. Your information has been added to our database and you will be contacted when information concerning the pilot becomes available. (Around November or December of this current year...2000). Please contact the National Board in Detroit at 1-800-22TEACH for information on the Library/Media standards. Thank you. Sincerely, Melissa Nolan Pilot Coordinator =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
